Our Mission

Heifer Indonesia's purpose is to assist in transforming rural communities to be just, self-reliant, and sustainable, thereby reducing hunger, poverty, and environmental degradation.

This is done by building trusting partnerships that strengthen local organizations, while sharing knowledge, livestock, and related resources ("Passing on the Gifts") with people in genuine need.

Our History

Heifer International has started its involvement for community development in Indonesia since 1982. In this early stage Heifer International assisted rural Javanese families with goats and sheep. In the mid 1980s, Heifer International developed partnerships with local organizations that assisted communities in the islands of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.

In 1997, Heifer International began to consolidate their work in Indonesia into a systematic country program of Heifer International Indonesia with a focus on Sumatra. In December 2003 Heifer-ID received legal status with the signing of a four years Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)[1] between HPI and the Centre for Agribusiness Enterpreneurship of the Indonesian Department of Agriculture. This MoU enabled Heifer Indonesia to operate officially under the Indonesian laws.

In 2004, Field Office for southern Sumatera was established. In April 2005, the office moved from Bukittinggi to Medan. In 2005, implementation of Sustainable Livelihood for Indigenous People through Integration of Livestock and Organic Farming Project, Microcredit to Strengthen Local Organizations to Support Family Livelihoods and Rebuilding Livelihood for Tsunami Disaster Affected Communities in Aceh and Nias Project was started.

Following the expansion of program, the number of staff increased significantly from 9 in 2004 to 26 in September 2007.

[1] According to Indonesian laws, International NGO operates in Indonesia should have MoU with relevant Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia. The MoU is signed under consent and agreement of Ministry of State Secretary and Foreign Affairs Ministry.
