and Improvement of Livestock
Production (Phase 3) (1996-2000)
ID#022-0060A
Project Profile
Since the first phase of this project started in 1986, 356 farmers
received a credit package or pass-ons of cattle, water buffalo, or goats.
The livestock population has increased by 790 animals. Under this program
25 women-led self-help groups were established with a membership of 460
families. Many farmers doubled their income through new income-generating
activities such as selling or renting of livestock for labor. Phases 1 and
2 of this project dealt with the social aspect of improving farmer’s
skills in organization, participation, bookkeeping, and livestock
techniques. Phase 3 will place more attention on economic aspects and
livestock management.

Project Holder
Bina Swadaya, established in 1967, is a community development
organization with a goal to improve the standard of living for rural
people through self-reliance groups and education/training programs. Their
activities include human resource development, assisting members in
establishing savings and loans, development of productive businesses, and
provision of information and appropriate technologies.
Training
The project begin with basic training in household
economic and family budgeting, group evaluation and planning. The program
also provides technical training in livestock management and business
management. Project participants are farmers organized in 22 groups with a
membership of about 521 farmers.
The collection of revolving funds is used to supply credit packages to
other members. Livestock shelter must be built before participants receive
their credit package. Facilities are built under supervision of Bina
Swadaya extension staff. Agroforestry is an ongoing part of the program.
Passing on the Gift
Pass-on begins after each participant repays their loan
obligation. Upon repayment of each credit package, similar livestock will
be provided to neighboring self-reliance groups.
Support from Other Sources
Heifer International is providing 30% of the cost of this
project.
