(2001-2006)
Project Profile
Farmers make up 70% of
the population in the subdistirct of Tangjung Batu, in Ogan Komering Ilir
(OKI) district in South Sumatra. In 1982, a 24,000 ha government sugar
cane plantation was opened in OKI district. four subdistricts, including
13 villages in Tangjung Batu, lost their traditional lands to this
plantation. The villagers recieved low compnesation for their land, and
without much farmland left, many of them had no other alterantvei except
to work as day laborers in the plantation.
Project Holder
The Village People's Welfare Foundation (Kemasda) is an NGO established
to motivate self-reliance among poor rural populations by seeking
alternaitves to overcome their problems. Several village youth from
Seribandung village in South Sumatra, after a long discussion process,
formed a committment to develop critical thinking among the local poor
population. As a result of this process, these youth formed Kemasda in
1982, which is now one of the oldest NGOs in South Sumatra.
