PUSPETASARI Klaten Dairy Development Program (Phase 4) (1995-2000)
ID#22-340C
Project Profile
During Phase 1 (1983-86), the program focused on establishing its
Center for Livestock Training, Research, and Demonstration Services,
development of optimal dairy feeding systems, and training of all
participating farm families in Klaten district. Phase 2 (1987-90)
concentrated on extension services, training farmers who were new to
dairying, and establishing an animal health service delivery system. Phase
3 (1991-94) focused on establishing a dairy cattle breeding operation. The
program provided local animals to farmers and a continuation and
improvement of training, extension, marketing, and veterinary services.
All activities are integrated with other agricultural and agroforestry
practices.
Phase 4
of this project will:
-
Improve
the farm families capacity to fulfill their needs in livestock
production, human nutrition, family income, employment generation, and
economic opportunity.
- Expand the current diary cattle breeding
farm from 80 to 160 head.
- Establish a 60 head beef cattle feeding
and holding farm to serve area farm families.
- Continue to provide western and
traditional veterinary and extension services to the district’s
2,500 dairy families.
Project Holder
PUSPETASARI Klaten is a federation of cooperatives in the
Central Java district of Klaten. Founded in 1980, it has a membership of
over 50,000 farm and artisan families. PUSPETASARI conducts several
training and extension activities. Operations include agricultural inputs,
credit programs, seed production, fishery products, horticultural and
secondary crops, animal feed production and supply, and the marketing of
rice, milk, eggs, furniture, and handicrafts.
Training
Training is conducted by local veterinarians, extension
personnel, and visiting technical experts. Sixty to 75 experienced farmers
receive extended field-oriented training every two months. Lecture and
hands-on training for 35-50 new farmers is provided every quarter.
Approximately 25% of the trainees are women.
Passing on the Gift
PUSPETASARI provides farmers with four to six month pregnant
heifers at a cost of 30% less than the previously-imported cattle.
Proceeds realized from the breeding operation goes into a revolving fund,
which is used to replace cattle for the dairy and beef cattle operations.
PUSPETASARI will continue to share the original gifts with the local
farmers through training, extension, vet services, feed research, and
demonstration.
Support from Other Sources
Heifer International is providing 25% of the cost of this
project and the remaining 75% is covered by PUSPETASARI, the four primary
cooperatives and NCBA.
