Relief Program for Sumatra

Background

is located in an area of the world that experiences regular natural disasters, such as earthquakes,

An undersea earthquake at magnitude of 9.0 followed by tsunami took place in Indian Ocean close to west coast of Sumatra islands. The resulting tsunami devastated the west coast of Sumatra in the province of Aceh and limited areas of North Sumatra province. The tsunami caused loss more than 200,000 lives in Aceh and Nias ( North Sumatra ). The calamities also devastated infrastructure, housing as well as fishing and agriculture land.

To express its solidarity and concern for the victim, Heifer International Indonesia carried out relief program to provide humanitarian assistance for affected communities in Aceh and Nias.

The impact of tsunami

Aceh province which locates in the north of Sumatra , has population of 4.1 million in 2004. Before the tsunami,  28 % of population were living below poverty level. In this province, the conflict between the Free Aceh Movement and the government of Indonesia has not yet resolved peacefully. The Free Aceh Movement which emerged in 1976 calling for independent Islamic government.

The calamity has caused loss of 220,149 lives of the population of Aceh and Nias. It also caused 400,062 displaced persons.

Relief Program

Objectives

To provide basic relief and humanitarian assistance for the survivors in the tsunami affected areas ithe province of Aceh and North Sumatera .

Implementation

The relief program was implemented in collaboration with local NGO partners in Medan , Banda Aceh and Nias. There are 6 NGO partners involved in the distribution of humanitarian assistance. They are (1) Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL); (2) Wahana Informasi Lingkungan Indonesia (WALHI);  (3) Yayasan Binneka Tunggal Ika (YBTI); (4) CCDE of Banda Aceh; (5) Mahardika of Medan; (6) BPB PGI of Nias.

The distribution of food supplies, emergency supply, medicines were delivered starting from 6  January 2005 . The distributions are described by table below.

YBTI 10-20 JAN Banda Aceh Medicine: vitamin, Lysol, rentalin injection, sulfur soap, metronidazale, Etc.
CCDE 1-8 MAR Banda Aceh Equipment:
School children wear and book
North Sumatra BPB PGI Nias 9 – 15 Jan Lahusa, Teluk Dalam, Mandrehe, Afulu Food: rice, salted fish, sugar
Mahardika 13-16 Jan Medan (Refugee from Aceh)

Food: rice, sinstant noodle, milk, onions, sugar

Equipment: baby wear, blanket, mat

The distribution involved 10 volunteers from project partners in Sumatera such as: YKMP of Palembang; LP2M of Padang and Soripada of Tarutung, Yayasan Sinar Desa. The relief and humanitarian assistant reach about 1500 person in the Aceh and Nias.

Closing Remark

In the implementation of the relief program, Heifer Indonesia team coordinated with national and local government. This is done by attending coordination meeting and sending formal notice.
