One Way to Future for Selamat Banten

Mr. Selamat Banten, 61 years old, is one of CAHV (Community Animal Health Volunteer) of PARAS-a project partner of Heifer Indonesia in North Sumatera-. He never finished his elementary school and had experiences many kind of works.

Married to Dariatik in 1984, they had 6 children (2 boys and 4 girls). In 1990 they moved to the subvillage of Tangkahan Telaga Tujuh with his parent in law. But then he dissipated by his parent in law because he had no job to fulfill his family needs (they are live in his parent in law’s house). Being alone, he fined himself so hopeless. Pass on that Changing The Muslims’ Lives !

Muslim used to struggle to meet his family basic needs. During dry season he used to work as farmer at swampy farming land. Due to very limited farming land, the harvest can not meet his family need. His day-laborer work at nearby sugar company was also sporadic. In other time, Muslim used to catch fish from nearby swamp to get additional money for his family. For the Muslims, life was a day-to-day struggle for meals. Muslim constantly worried about where the next meal for his family would come from.

Mr Sukirin

“Mooooo…” , teased the villagers whenever Mr. Sukirin passes by their houses and Sukirin-a humorist person- always laugh at it.Mr. Sukirin is a trained CAHVI (Community Animal Health Volunteer in Indonesia) from Kota Pari, District of Pantai Cermin, Deli Serdang - North Sumatera. 2006 GTA Winner

Bayung Lencir is the name of this small and remote village in South Sumatra. Their daily activity are collecting rattan and felling trees, but all those activity still could not fulfill their economic need. They sell the rattan and tress’ log far below market price. Living in the river side in their raft houses also have given them consequences such as lack of education, had no social interaction, bad sanitation and hygiene.....read more

 

From receiver to giver

Many things happened since the first time of Mr. Nikman joining Heifer Indonesia project. One of remarkable thing for him and his family that after 20 months being project participant, he is equal with Heifer Indonesia to help poor farmers to help themselves. It was two a.m. in the morning when Ms. Hipziyah (Ms. Hip) was aroused from her sleep in the village of Tebadak in South Sumatra. Many of her colleagues in the farmer's group, Tani Makmur, came to ask her help to find a member's heifer that had escaped from its stall. Along the river
As we got out of the car in the driveway of the Village Sons Foundation (YPD) NGO house in Palembang, South Sumatra, it was easy to notice that there was a lot going on. Young people were attending the chores of the facility. A community group was sitting in the front room working on a better understanding of gender in their programming. Staff were working at the many desks that occupied every room of the old house, while Director Arhandi and others came out to greet us. In the converted house, the walls demonstrated the results of intense learning activity with lists of objectives, and action plans as well as organizational structures and pictures of project activity.

The litter picker
Bumi Ayu village is located in Lampung, the southernmost province on the island of Sumatra. Most of the people here actually came from the neighboring island of Java. Because the population in Java is too high, the government relocated them to Lampung. Most of the people are farmers living in rural areas, working as laborers in nearby factories, tenant-farming on someone else's land or maintaining their own small space to plant crops.
